Seeds and Soil

Below is the post from Forward Day by Day for April 30th., 2013. The author of the meditation sees us as the seed and God as the soil. There is the danger that if we, as individuals, see ourselves as working toward God's Kingdom we only picture ourselves as the  seed that falls in the good soil. It is interesting to note that we can, during our lives, pass through the various "soils" according to this author.

Prior to the parable about the seeds and soil verses two and three of chapter eight name several women and says, "... who provided for them (him) out of their resources." (NSRV) These verses point to an early example of stewardship which is, I think, often overlooked as we rush forward to the verses about seed and soil.

 TUESDAY, April 30

Luke 8:1-15. But as for that in the good soil, these are the ones who, when they hear the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience endurance.

Now what do we do? Seeds fall upon the path and are trampled. Seeds fall on the rock, try to reach the word of God, but cannot take root. Seeds fall upon the ground and prosper, believing for a while, but are choked by the thorns of riches and pleasures.

This parable is a microsynopsis of our journey to God. We fall on the path and are squashed by a steamroller of misfortunes: illness, depression, addiction, loss of loved ones—the thousand natural shocks that man is heir to. We fall on the rock of prosperity, buying all we want and little of what we need. We fall on the ground of excuses: I don’t pray because God knows what I want; I don’t go to church because it is full of hypocrites; nature is my church.

We are the seed in the soil of God’s grace and blessings. We hold “fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patient endurance.” That is what we do.
