Economic Inequality: The increasing divide between the Monied Elite and the Middle Class and Working Poor

"Surveys of the very wealthy have, however, shown that they — unlike the general public — consider budget deficits a crucial issue and favor big cuts in safety-net programs. And sure enough, those elite priorities took over our policy discourse."

The above quote is a portion of the article below by Paul Krugman. As the title of the article indicates he talks about the inequality that has been and continues to develop between the monied elite and the middle and working class of the population. He and other pundits speak of the damage that has been done to the middle class; and they are correct about this damage. What is often not spoken of, however, is the suffering (that is not to strong a word) that has been inflected on the people at the very bottom of the economy. Cutting SNAP (food stamps) and unemployment insurance for the long term unemployed has exacerbated the problem. One proof of this can be seen in the increased pressure that has been put on food banks across the country.

The balance of the article that the above quote comes from can be read at: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/16/opinion/krugman-why-inequality-matters.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss
